MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“The stage but echoes back the public voice.
The drama’s laws the drama’s patrons give,
For we that live to please, must please to live”
– Johnson
On behalf of the Academy, it is with a great sense of happiness that I extend to all of you, this evening, a very warm welcome to “Razzle Dazzle”.
Occasions such as this are very important and significant to students, in their long journey of preparation of their personalities, to meet the grueling demands of life ahead. As individuals, we move in a constant spotlight of attention, where from an early age what we say and do is noticed and recorded, measured and judged. In the light of this, our need to communicate effectively and sensitively has never been greater. While sensitising the young in a focused manner to this beautiful aspect of the arts, which we call drama, a public performance such as this will also provide the young, an opportunity for their latent talents to surface and take root, blossom and bloom. Much preparation and hard work has gone into making this day a reality and it has been particularly heartening to observe the young students of this Academy work together with their teachers to do justice to the teaching and learning of English and Drama at our Academy.
A competent knowledge of English in order to achieve success in any chosen field cannot be underestimated or disputed. In view of this, we take great pride that we have restored English to its rightful place. Having the facilities, the atmosphere and the deep dedication of highly motivated and committed members of our staff, which our students have taken advantage of, we are also happy to place on record our success in the teaching of English and Drama in its many forms. This is amply reflected in the results of the examinations conducted by the Trinity College of London and the Colombo Academy of Language Skills and DramaticArt [CALSDA].
May I take this opportunity to thank all our dear students, teachers, parents and the many well-wishers, who gave us their unstinted support in numerous ways. I also wish to thank our donors, advertisers and you the audience for your gracious presence. May the good Lord bless and keep you all in his protective gaze.
Message from the Chief Guest
“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it”. – Holy Bible.
I am indeed very happy to contribute this message to RAZZLE DAZZLE a concert organised by the Varuni Jayasekara Academy of Speech, Drama and Communication. Having being personally associated with Mrs. Varuni Jayasekara for many decades and followed her progress in this field, I am proud to be associated with this concert which is a tribute to all those little ones and those who have grown with her under her guidance mastering that beautiful language of communication, English.
Children are the greatest and most invaluable human resource available to us. In them reside dormant and latent talents waiting to be chiseled and honed to perfection. With gentle and caring ways they need to be made to appreciate their capabilities and encouraged to project themselves with confidence. Occasions such as this give them that stage to be themselves and to measure and prepare themselves for the rigorous lives ahead. So let us all be there for them and appreciate their pure, natural and untarnished talents as they project their sheer innocence of childhood, a lesson to us adults.

Message from the Chief Guest
I am pleased to be invited by Ms. Varuni Jayasekara, Principal, Varuni Jayasekara Academy of Speech, Drama and Communication, to attend this evening’s entertainment “Razzle Dazzle” at the Bishop’s College Auditorium and honoured to be the Chief Guest. I am sure all present, will enjoy the performances given by her talented pupils. I am happy to congratulate these children on their success, their teachers for their dedication, and their parents for encouraging their children to follow courses which would be beneficial to them. To Ms Jayasekara, I say “well done!”
Looking back, I remember a time when I called upon Ms. Jayasekara to help me present a Nativity Play, in response to a request from one of the NGO’S undertaking an Inter-religious, Harmony Programme. She accepted without hesitation. In a short time, with a handful of children, she produced a very meaningful Play, fine tuning, each detail, from the choral music, acting, narration to the costumes.
I was able to get the support of a few members from the Choir of the Church of the Living Saviour, which added a dignified backdrop to the Nativity. Of course, the Play was well received, as the children gave a very effective and beautiful performance. Consequently, there were requests from two other organizations, to “repeat” the Nativity Play at their premises. The children were overjoyed when they were told that they had made a good impression, and had been invited to perform at two different venues!
Her many talented pupils, have brought honour to her Academy, and to Trinity College London, examinations. I have pleasure in wishing her teachers and pupils more success in the future. To Ms. Jayasekara, I express warm thanks, and look forward to an enjoyable evening.

Message from the Guest of Honour
It gives me great pleasure to send a message for “Razzle Dazzle” presented by the pupils of the Varuni Jayasekara Academy of Speech, Drama and Communication.
As National Representative for Trinity College London, and Trinity Guildhall, UK, I am happy to be associated with Mrs. Varuni Jayasekara, as she is a familiar figure at the Sri Lankan centre. Initially, she was a student sitting the Trinity Diplomas up to Fellowship level, and, also, being successful in the Licentiate level of Effective Communication and the Licentiate level of Teaching English as a Second Language. She very quickly began teaching, and in a short space of time has opened her own Academy with many students.
Varuni supports Trinity College London & Trinity Guildhall, by entering her students to obtain the prestigious Certificate.
Trinity London was incorporated in 1876. It is the oldest College in the Performing Arts in the UK. In 1881, just 4 years later, a Centre was opened in Sri Lanka. Today, 129 years after the very first examinations. Trinity conducts assessments in more than 50 countries, in all branches of the Performing and Communicative arts, hence the slogan “Assessing the Performing Arts since 1877”.
I wish Mrs. Varuni Jayasekara, her teachers and her students the very best in the future.
